ERC Proof of Concept grants - first 2024 winners announced

Two of the ten French winners of the first wave of the European Research Council's (ERC) Proof of Concept call for 2024 are hosted by CNRS.

The European Research Council (ERC) has selected 100 projects for the first wave of the Horizon Europe framework programme's 'Proof of Concept' call for 2024. Ten are from France with two hosted by the CNRS.

Since the programme's introduction in 2011, the ERC has awarded Proof of Concept grants to over 2000 projects. Welcoming the latest news, liana Ivanova, the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, said that "since 2011 when the scheme started, ERC grantees have received over €300 million in Proof of Concept grants. Thanks to Horizon Europe funding, they could advance on the path from ground-breaking research to innovation. These researchers are a great example of how to translate and commercialise the strong research output funded by the EU."

This call is for scientists who were awarded an ERC Starting, Consolidator, Advanced or Synergy grant less than a year earlier and now wish to exploit the results of their research, develop their innovation potential and foster closer links with the market. These grants are worth a maximum of €150,000 over up to 18 months and are intended to support the commercial and societal potential of former ERC grant-winning projects.

The following two grant winners are from the CNRS:

  • Lyderic Bocquet - CNRS research professor in physics - the École normale supérieure's Physics Laboratory (LPENS, CNRS/ENS Paris/Sorbonne Université/Université de Paris)
    Project: RealEase -
    RealEase constraints of desalination
  • Aleksandra Maria Walczak - researcher in theoretical biophysics - the École normale supérieure's Physics Laboratory (LPENS, CNRS/ENS Paris/Sorbonne Université/Université de Paris)
Project: RESPOND - Computational scanning for responding clonotypes in immune repertoires
